Our Purpose for this Assessment
One of the goals of the Church, according to Paul is that we attain maturity in Jesus Christ.
"It was he who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets….to prepare God’s people for works of service so that we may be built up, until we reach unity in faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Jesus Christ." Ephesians 4:11-13
Scripture makes it clear that Spiritual maturity is not an instantaneous process. Hebrews 6:1 exhorts us to continue progressing to Maturity. While we have an Alien righteousness imparted to us at our point of justifying grace, maturing in our relationship with God is a continual process. Oswald Sanders wrote, "The whole tenor of scripture is against the idea that one act of decision permanently secures for us the blessings of sanctification." Maturity in our relationship with God is not merely a mastery of scriptural teaching nor a possession of gifts. It is not about copying Christ as we are not able to regenerate a copy in our own strength. Instead it is about allowing God to draw us into His Holiness as He reorients our life to love Him and others and to receive His love. It means that we have fully surrendered to the power of God's grace in our lives.
