Chris Ferguson joined First UMC as the Director of Hospitality and New Member Assimilation on July 2, 2023. Chris brings with him a wealth of experience and a deep passion for helping people find their spiritual home.

With a focus on fostering authentic and vulnerable relationships, Chris believes that true spiritual growth happens through meaningful connections with others. His role encompasses not only guiding individuals towards finding their place within First UMC Lubbock but also extending the warm embrace of the Wesley Community Groups in the surrounding areas.

Having been involved in church plants and building small group communities in the past, Chris understands the value of nurturing close-knit communities where individuals can thrive in their faith. With an emphasis on relationships and genuine connection, he aims to create an environment where people can experience God’s love through transparent and honest interactions with one another.

Chris’s ministry experience spans over 12 years, during which he has served in various roles across different churches. He has been a Director of Youth Ministry, an Associate Family Ministries Director, an Associate Director of Adult Discipleship, and a Director of Men’s Ministry. At his previous church, Chapelwood United Methodist Church in Houston, he also served as the primary premarital and partial counselor on campus. Chris’s commitment to supporting individuals extends beyond the spiritual realm, as he became a certified Prepare-Enrich Facilitator and a certified Christian Counselor.

Education has played a significant role in shaping Chris’s ministry journey. He attended Abilene Christian University, where he earned his undergraduate degree in Youth and Family Ministry and Psychology in 2010. In 2023, he furthered his knowledge by obtaining a certificate in Christian Counseling from Grand Canyon University.

Chris’s personal life is equally fulfilling. He met his wife, Katie–a Lubbock native, at ACU, and they tied the knot on August 1, 2009. The couple has two boys, Callen and Barrett, who are only 15 months apart, bringing joy and adventure to their lives.

Beyond his professional and family life, Chris is an avid sports enthusiast, with a particular love for football and basketball. Being a dedicated Houston Texans fan, he is now excited to immerse himself in the Texas Tech culture and develop a greater appreciation for all things related to the university.

When it comes to his favorite things, Chris has a diverse range of interests. Mexican food, cheeseburgers, sweet tea, and Skittles hold a special place in his heart. For leisure, he finds solace in Orange Beach, Alabama, a beloved vacation spot. Music is also a significant part of Chris’s life, with the Dave Matthews Band being his favorite, along with a deep affinity for 80s and 90s tunes.

With his extensive experience, genuine passion for people, and dedication to fostering meaningful relationships, Chris Ferguson is an invaluable addition to the First UMC team. His expertise and warm personality will undoubtedly contribute to the growth and spiritual enrichment of the community as they embark on this exciting journey together.
